Vienna Austria

Vienna is in eastern Austria, 40km from the Hungarian, Czech, and Slovak borders. An imposing and dominating metropolis ever since it ruled over a vast and heterogeneous empire, Vienna dwarfs the rest of Austria-culturally, historically, and demographically-to a degree unmatched even by Paris or London. The birthplace of the Viennese waltz is still abuzz with balls from December to March. Monuments to playwrights, musicians, and poets are scattered throughout the city on desultory comers.

Hotels in Vienna

The only unplesant aspect of Vienna is the hunt for cheap hotels. From July to September student residences are converted to seasonal hotels, giving a much-needed boost to the number of beds at the lower end of the market. A few rooms in private homes are on offer, mostly in the suburbs, but economic affluence over recent years has reduced the supply; expect a three day minimum stay. Staying within the Innere Stadt is convenient for the sights, although inevitably accommodation here is the most expensive in the city. Most hotels and pensions are between the Ring and the Gurtel; these are better value and still within easy striking distance of the centre. Places in the suburbs have the lowest prices but are less accessible; these are a more viable option if you're not too interested in late-night attractions in the city.

5 Star Hotels

Nearly all of Vienna's five-star hotels are within the Innere Stadt. Standard or 'economy' rooms are comfortable and have all of the expected fittings and facilities, but they're not necessarily much better than those in a good four star place; you're really paying the premium for the ambience, reputation, better service and the grandeur of the reception and lobby areas. All of these places offer 'superior' rooms and suites. Breakfast generally costs extra, but may be included in special, lower weekend rates.
